Why Hire a Counselor?

High school students may feel that college is far away. The reality is, it will be here before you know it. Questions will pop into your head: Where do I want to go to college? To how many colleges should I apply? What am I looking for in a college? Can I play sports in college? Can I be a member of the choir in college? What will my major be? How will I pay for college? All good questions that can be answered when you are working with a college counselor. The job of the counselor is to take the college applicant through the college search and application process in a timely manner that is stress-free.

We don’t think twice about hiring a plumber, electrician, HVAC person or lawyer when we need expertise in those areas. We know that we have not been trained or had the experience to competently address and solve the problem. Though college counseling is not as urgent as a broken water pipe or lack of air conditioning during 101 degree day, it is still important in order to avoid mistakes and meet deadlines.

Freshman/Sophomore Years

It is never too early to start talking about college. What classes prepare you for college acceptance? What extra-curricular activities should you do? How many activities? What does it mean to have leadership roles? Let’s start talking about this now.

Your college process turbo boost!
When our children started attending a well-known private school with an outstanding college advisory program we were impressed. There was a lot of support, resources and opportunities to work on the college process. But, because of other high priority activities in our son’s life, he needed a more personalized and focused approach to provide an extra boost. More importantly as parents we felt our son should be guided by someone who understood our values and the importance they played in the college decision. Craig Fredrickson was exactly what we needed.

In retrospect, we should have enlisted the assistance of Craig earlier in the process, but our first meeting was in mid-October of our son’s senior year and couldn’t have come at a more opportune time. During our family meeting, Craig was able to have our son verbalize why he thought a college would want to accept him and what qualities and programs he was looking for in a college. Together they determined that his current essay on fishing was well written, but didn’t portray his strengths and that focusing on his leadership role at camp would be more appropriate.

The next day our son wrote an outstanding essay which showed his strong character as well as his writing skills. Two weeks later, with input from Craig, his college applications were submitted on November 1st and then the acceptance letters started coming in right away.

Craig has been instrumental in our daughter’s college search. His gentle yet firm approach transformed a previously painful process, to a highly successful and joy-filled one.
